Beginner basics

Where to go

Pick a beach between 30th and 80th street, well away from the inlet jetties. Look for a sandbar with a clean rolling shoulder rather than a wedging peak right by a rock pile.

What to avoid

Stay clear of all jetty rocks and any visible rip channel. In summer the lineup is packed with rentals — keep your distance from anyone yelling 'left' or 'right' on a wave.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-chest NE or E swell, light W or NW wind, mid to high tide. Early mornings are cleanest before the sea breeze.
