Beginner basics
Where to go
Stay 100+ yards north of the jetty rocks where the inside reform breaks gentler. The shallow inside bar handles small swells well for first sessions.
What to avoid
Don't paddle anywhere near the inlet itself — the outgoing tide rip can sweep you out into the channel within minutes. The main jetty peak is locals-only and not a learning spot.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-chest swell, light W or NW wind, mid-incoming tide. Early summer weekday mornings before the lifeguarded crowd shows up.
