Beginner basics
Where to go
Pleasure Point is a series of crowded reef and cobblestone peaks ridden by competent regulars — not a learning wave. The far inside on the smallest days can work for an upper beginner, but you'll be in the way.
What to avoid
Stay off the main peaks (First Peak, Sewer Peak, The Hook) on any swell. Cobblestones at low tide are punishing and the locals run a tight pecking order. Cold water year-round means a 4/3 wetsuit minimum.
Best beginner conditions
Pleasure Point isn't beginner-friendly. Drive 10 minutes to Cowell's Beach for a true Santa Cruz first session.
