Beginner basics

Where to go

Walk down the beach until you find the smallest, most-organized peak away from any visible rip. The inside reform on a clean day is a fine sandy-bottom wave to learn on.

What to avoid

Don't surf alone here — it's a wild beach with long walks to help, shifting sandbars, and strong rips. Keep the dunes lined up with a fixed landmark to spot drift fast.

Best beginner conditions

Waist-high E swell, 9-11s period, light W wind, mid tide. Pick a flat, glassy morning and bring a buddy.
