Beginner basics

Where to go

Cannon Beach is a cold, exposed, powerful Oregon beachbreak — not a true beginner zone. On the smallest, cleanest days the inside reform near Tolovana Park (south end) is the most manageable area for an advancing beginner.

What to avoid

Strong rips form between sandbars, especially around Haystack Rock — don't paddle near it. After winter storms, drifting logs in the surf zone are a real injury risk. Cold water demands a 5/4 hooded wetsuit, gloves, and booties year-round.

Best beginner conditions

Cannon Beach isn't beginner-friendly. For learning on the Oregon coast, head south to Otter Rock / Beverly Beach which is more sheltered. If you do surf here, wait for a tiny, glassy summer morning with light E wind on a mid-dropping tide.
