Beginner basics
Where to go
First Point on a small day is rideable for an advanced beginner who can stay out of everyone's way, but the cobblestone takeoff is rocky. Third Point inside on a tiny day is mellower and less crowded.
What to avoid
Do not paddle into the First Point peak — it's a longboard freeway with extreme localism and you will get run over. The rocks at the takeoff cause more injuries than the wave.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-waist S or SW swell, light N or NE wind, low to mid tide. Try a weekday dawn patrol and only after you can already paddle out, stand up, and turn confidently.
