Beginner basics

Where to go

The middle of the peninsula (around 38th–56th street) has mellower beachbreak peaks away from the dangerous south end. Stay between lifeguard towers and pick a small, organized day.

What to avoid

Do not go anywhere near The Wedge at the south end of the peninsula — it's a bodysurf-only shorebreak that has paralyzed people. The south jetty rip and the Newport Pier area are also no-go for first sessions.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-waist S or SW swell, light E wind, mid tide. Early summer mornings up around 40th street are the friendliest window.
