Beginner basics

Where to go

The beaches between jetties (try the stretch around 16th–18th avenue) offer organized peaks with sand bottom and lifeguards in season. Pick a small, clean day and stay mid-beach away from the rocks.

What to avoid

Don't paddle next to the jetty rocks — the rip pulls you straight in and the rocks are sharp. In summer you need a beach badge, and the lineup gets crowded with a competitive Jersey vibe; respect the locals.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-chest NE or E swell, 9s+ period, light W (offshore) wind, mid tide. Late spring through early fall is the friendliest window. Cold water in winter demands a 5/4 hooded wetsuit.
