Beginner basics

Where to go

The designated surf zones at 67th and 90th street are NYC's official learner waters — sand bottom, lifeguards in season, and a friendly mixed-ability crowd. Stay between the flagged surf-only signs.

What to avoid

Don't surf outside the designated surf zones — you'll get cited and you'll be in the swim area. Cold water in winter (January–April) demands a 5/4 hooded wetsuit; don't underestimate it. Watch the shifty sandbars after storms.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-chest E or S swell on 9s+, light W or NW (offshore) wind, mid tide. Late summer through early fall (hurricane season) is prime; summer mornings before the A train crowd shows up are the calmest.
