Beginner basics

Where to go

The island has plenty of friendly beaches — Barra da Lagoa and the south end of Praia Mole on small days are reasonable for an advancing beginner. Take a lesson at Barra da Lagoa first.

What to avoid

Joaquina's main peak and Praia Brava on any size are not beginner zones. Stay out of any rip channel slicing seaward — they're common on all the open beaches.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-waist S or SE swell, 9-11s period, light N or NW wind, mid tide. Early-summer mornings before the onshore. Wear at least a 2 mm in winter.
