Beginner basics
Where to go
Joaquina's main peak is a historic contest wave and not for beginners. The far north end of the beach on small days has gentler reforms used by surf schools.
What to avoid
Stay completely off the main peak — it's powerful, sectiony, and crowded. Closeouts are punishing on bigger days and the sandbars shift, so a 'safe' spot one day may be a rip the next.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-waist S or SE swell, light N or NW wind, mid tide. Take a lesson with one of the schools at the north end before paddling out alone.
