Beginner basics
Where to go
Honolua is a serious right-hand reef pointbreak with strong currents and heavy localism — not a learning wave. Watch from the cliff to understand the lineup before ever paddling out.
What to avoid
The Cave (takeoff zone), the inside reef, and the rip that runs along the cliff out the bay. On bigger days the current carries you straight into the boulders past the bay's mouth.
Best beginner conditions
Honolua is not for first-timers. Try The Cove in Kihei (Maui) or take lessons in Lahaina before considering anything on the north shore.
