Beginner basics
Where to go
Canoes and Queens are the world's most famous beginner waves — soft, slow, long rollers over a deep reef. Take a lesson, stick to the inside zone, and mind the outrigger canoes.
What to avoid
Don't drift toward Queens' main peak (locals run that takeoff) and stay clear of the deeper outside lineup. Watch for canoe traffic — they have right of way and won't stop.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-waist S or SW swell, light E or NE trade wind, mid to high tide. Almost any summer morning works. Foam board, sunscreen, smile.
