Beginner basics
Where to go
Old Man's and Dogpatch are two of the friendliest learning waves in California — long, slow, sand-and-cobble-bottom rollers with a welcoming longboard culture. Stay on the inside reform and respect the longboarders.
What to avoid
Don't drop in on the longboarders riding from outside — etiquette is friendly but real here. Watch the cobblestones at low tide on the takeoff, and remember the state park has an entry fee and parking fills early.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-chest S or SW swell, light NE (offshore) wind, any tide (mid is cleanest). Weekday mornings outside summer holidays are the calmest. Bring a longboard.
