Trestles is not a beginner spot — the lineup is stacked with the best surfers in Southern California. Church (the southernmost peak, before Cottons) is the mellowest, but still expects competence.

What to avoid

Avoid Lowers entirely — it's the most contested wave in California and you'll be the kook story for the day. Don't snake or drop in; etiquette is enforced socially and loudly.

Best beginner conditions

Trestles is best left until you can confidently paddle into a chest-high wave and make sections. For learning in this region, head north to San Onofre's Old Man's instead.
