Beginner basics

Where to go

Uluwatu is a world-class shallow reef pass — not a beginner spot. There's no easy zone. Padang Padang Right (Baby Padang) on a small day or Balangan inside is mellower, but still requires intermediate skill.

What to avoid

The cave entrance, the reef itself, and the entire lineup. Currents through the cave on incoming tide are real. Razor-sharp reef will cut you badly even at chest-high.

Best beginner conditions

Uluwatu isn't beginner-friendly. Learn at Kuta Beach, Seminyak, or Batu Bolong (Canggu) instead — sand-bottom and forgiving.
