Beginner basics

Where to go

Cloud 9 itself is a heavy, shallow reef barrel — not a beginner wave. Quicksilver, Jacking Horse, and Daku are mellower nearby reefs/breaks where intermediate-level students go. Pacifico Beach has true beginner zones.

What to avoid

The main Cloud 9 peak on any size. The reef is razor-sharp and only inches deep at low tide. Boats run constantly through the channel; stay out of the boat lane.

Best beginner conditions

Surf at Pacifico or Quicksilver inside on small days. Knee-to-chest NE swell, light W or SW wind, mid to high tide. August–November is the consistent season.
