Beginner basics
Where to go
Windansea is a heavy reef with strong localism, urchins, and a shallow takeoff — not a beginner wave. Watch from the iconic palm-roofed shack on the beach to learn the lineup before ever paddling out.
What to avoid
The main reef peaks on any size, and the entire reef at low tide (urchins everywhere). Locals run the lineup and visiting kooks aren't welcomed. Don't paddle out alone.
Best beginner conditions
Windansea isn't beginner-friendly. Drive 10 minutes north to La Jolla Shores — it's one of San Diego's classic mellow learner beaches with sand bottom and surf schools.
