Beginner basics

Where to go

Pick a beach access several blocks south of Johnnie Mercer's Pier with lifeguards present. The sand-bottom inside reforms are a classic Carolinas learning wave.

What to avoid

Don't surf next to the pier pilings — collisions happen and are serious. Stay out of the Masonboro Inlet area on the south end; the current there is no joke.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-chest E or SE swell, light W or NW wind, mid to high tide. Weekday mornings outside summer school holidays are the quietest.
