Beginner basics

Where to go

Itacoatiara is one of Brazil's heaviest beach breaks — deep water cove, big drops, hollow shorebreak. There is no beginner zone here. Watch from the rocks and surf elsewhere.

What to avoid

The entire lineup. The shorebreak has injured experienced surfers; the rip pulls hard out the right side of the cove. On any day over chest-high it is genuinely dangerous.

Best beginner conditions

Itacoatiara is never beginner-friendly. Drive 30 minutes to Itaipu or learn at Copacabana/Leblon on a small day instead.
