Beginner basics

Where to go

Maresias is a powerful, fast beach break — Gabriel Medina's home for a reason. The south end (right corner) on a small day is the mellowest spot to start.

What to avoid

Stay completely off the main central peak. It's contested, fast, and closes out hard on size. Strong rips form on the bigger days; on a flat day stick to the inside reform only.

Best beginner conditions

Wait for a tiny day (knee-high S swell, sub-3 ft), light N wind, mid tide. Better yet, learn first at neighboring Pauba or Camburi, both calmer.
