Beginner basics
Where to go
Ditch Plains' inside reform on a small day is the friendliest learning wave on the point. Stay on the sand-bottom inside, well away from the cobblestone takeoff zone.
What to avoid
Don't try to paddle out to the main Ditch peak or any of the rocky points (Turtles, Poles) — locals own those lineups and the rocks are unforgiving. Cold water in shoulder seasons demands a real wetsuit.
Best beginner conditions
Waist-high S swell on a 10s+ period, light N or NE wind, mid to high tide. Late-summer glassy mornings are the sweet spot.
