Beginner basics

Where to go

New Smyrna's main beach south of the inlet has soft, friendly peaks and is one of Florida's most-surfed beginner waves. Pick an access well south of Ponce Inlet and stay between lifeguard towers.

What to avoid

Stay completely out of the inlet itself — strong currents and the highest shark-bite rate in the world (mostly minor nips on hands and feet, but real). Don't surf at dusk, dawn, or in murky water, and avoid wearing shiny jewelry.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-waist E or NE swell, light W (offshore) wind, mid tide. Year-round warm water and friendly conditions; weekday mornings are the quietest.
