Beginner basics
Where to go
The horseshoe bay protects the inside from the worst of the swell — start near the south corner of the main beach where the bay shelters you. The reform is a manageable learning wave on small days.
What to avoid
Don't paddle to the outside reefs (the right-hand point on the north side) until you have real experience — they're rocky and the current pushes you out of the bay. Cold water in winter (June–August).
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-waist S or SE swell, 10s+ period, light N or NW wind, mid tide. Late spring and autumn are the friendliest seasons.
