Beginner basics
Where to go
Côte des Basques on a small mid-tide day is one of Europe's classic learning spots — long, mellow, sand-bottom rollers. Many surf schools run lessons here.
What to avoid
Don't paddle out at Côte des Basques on a low tide — rocks become a real hazard. Avoid Grande Plage in the mid-summer crush and stay aware of strong rips on bigger days.
Best beginner conditions
Knee-to-waist W swell, 9-11s period, light E or SE wind, mid to high tide at Côte des Basques. May–June and September are the sweet spots.
