Where to go

There is no beginner area at Nazaré's Praia do Norte. Watch from the lighthouse cliff and stay on the sand. The town beach (Praia da Nazaré, south side) is calmer for swimming on a flat day.

What to avoid

Praia do Norte at any size. The canyon focuses swell so hard that even small-looking days can produce 15-foot freaks. Currents will pull you into deep, cold open ocean within minutes.

Best beginner conditions

Nazaré is never beginner-friendly. For learning in Portugal, head south to Baleal (near Peniche) or to Carcavelos near Lisbon.
