Beginner basics

Where to go

Hossegor is a famously heavy Atlantic beach break with shifting deep-water sandbanks. The friendliest beaches are Plage des Culs Nus and the south end of Plage Sud on small days, away from La Gravière.

What to avoid

Stay off La Gravière and La Nord on any size — they're heavy barrels that close out viciously. Strong rips form between banks; the seabed drops off fast even close to shore.

Best beginner conditions

Knee-to-chest W or NW swell, 10-12s period, light E wind, mid-dropping tide. Late spring and early autumn before the big swell season.
